What the World Needs Now is Love

At the beginning of this school year, our Chorus students participated in a nationwide project to sing "What the World Needs Now is Love."  Choruses from across the country all learned the song in hopes of spreading love and making the world a better place.  These performances were compiled and put into a single video.

You can see our Memorial School Chorus students singing at 0:41.  Also check out the Leicester Middle School Choruses at 1:35.

This was a fun project for us to collaborate on, and I am proud of the hard work that our students did!

Thank you to Mount Pleasant High School in Providence, RI for compiling the videos to create the final product!

Wise Old Owl

Preschoolers have been singing the echo song, "Wise Old Owl."  We have loved singing to our stuffed animal owl and creating our own motions to go along with this song.

Echo songs teach students to find their singing voice, match pitch, and gain independence in their singing.  We start by having the whole class echo the teacher and will eventually move to individual students echoing the teacher.

Here are the lyrics.  Can you echo your child?

One of these days (one of these days)
Look up and see (look up and see)
A wise old owl (a wise old owl)
Sitting in a tree (sitting in a tree).

He’ll look at you (he’ll look at you)
And he’ll look at at me (and he’ll look at me).
Those two big eyes (those two big eyes)
They don’t scare me (they don’t scare me).

One of these nights (one of these nights)
When raindrops fall (when raindrops fall)
He’ll give a hoot, (he’ll give a hoot),

He’ll give a call (he’ll give a call).

Listen to Mrs. Beaudry's preschool class sing the song here:

Listen to Mrs. Beaudry's class sing solos here:
Wise Old Owl Solos
You will notice that some of our preschoolers have found their singing voices already and some are still emerging singers. We will continue exploring our voices until all students are able to find their singing voices.

Big Pig

Image result for pig clipartPreschoolers have been exploring their high and low voices with the poem, "Big Pig."  We start every music class with a vocal exploration activity so that students can start to understand the different sounds their voices can make and can learn to access their "singing voices."

This poem is really fun because we used our high squeaky voices and our low pig voices to tell a story.  Once we knew it well, students could work together to tell the story, with one student speaking the high parts and one student speaking the low parts.

Here are the words:

“Where are you going, Big Pig, Big Pig?”
Spoken with a high voice.

“Out in the garden to dig, dig, dig!”
Spoken with a low voice.

“Out in the garden to dig, dig, dig?
Shame on you, Big Pig, Big Pig!”
Spoken with a high voice.

“I’m sorry, ma’am, but I’m only a pig,
And all I can do is dig, dig, dig!”

Spoken with a low voice.
