Kindergarten - 2nd Grade

Learn to perform a new version of the simple folk dance Seven Jumps with Mrs. Hiltz by watching the video below.  Invite the people in your house to dance with you!  Then, send me a picture or a FlipGrid video (1st & 2nd grade only) of your favorite statue pose you did during this dance.

3rd & 4th Grade
Learn Los Machetes, a folk dance from Mexico.  To perform this folk dance, you will need two rhythm sticks.  Be creative with your sticks - use drumsticks, wooden spoons, pencils, sticks from outside...  Follow the directions in the video to learn the folk dance.

For your assignment, you have two options:
Option 1: Learn the moves to Los Machetes by following the video above.  Then, send me a video of yourself performing the motions.  Make sure you learn section C well before recording your video!
Option 2: Watch the clip below of children in Mexico performing the same folk dance.  Send me an email or FlipGrid video telling me 2 similarities and 2 differences between the way they performed the dance and the way we performed it.

Home Learning - Week of 4/20

Kindergarten - 2nd Grade
In honor of Earth Day, let's learn two songs about trees.  After you have sung along with the video, tell me which song was your favorite.  Did you like "In the Woods" or "Standing Like a Tree" better?  You can send me a FlipGrid video (1st & 2nd grade only) or an email and I would love to see some videos of you singing!

3rd & 4th Grade
Let's learn about harmony with the song "I Love the Flowers." We can add harmony to this song in a variety of ways.  Watch the video to see some examples, and make sure to sing along!  When you're done watching the video, answer the following questions:
  1. What were the two ways we added harmony to "I Love the Flowers"?
  2. Which version of harmony did you like better and why?
Send me the answers to these questions through FlipGrid or email.  I would also love to hear you sing part of the song for me!  I miss singing with you!

Home Learning - Week of 4/13

Kindergarten-2nd Grade
Watch the A-Tisket, A-Tasket singalong video.  Use materials you find around your house to create a shaker to keep the beat along with the video.  Make a Flipgrid video (links are in Mrs. Donovan's Google Classroom - 1st-4th grade only) to show Mrs. Hiltz how you sing the song with your shaker, or email me a picture!

3rd-4th Grade
Watch the video tutorial about how to use Chrome Music Lab - Songmaker.  Create a composition with at least a melody and percussion part.  Make sure to start and end on red to make it sound complete!  Save your composition to get a link.  Make a Flipgrid video (links are in Mrs. Donovan's Google Classroom) to introduce your composition, then insert the link to your composition before you publish your video.  You can also email me the link to your composition.

3rd-4th Grade
Watch the video tutorial for The Sevens beat keeping game.  Learn all four patterns and level up throughout the recorded music.  Then, choose your own school appropriate song.  Can you make it all the way to level 4?  Share a Flipgrid video (links are in Mrs. Donovan's Google Classroom) doing The Sevens with the song of your choice!

Optional Extension Activity: Did you like the Sevens?  See if you can level up to level 6 with this bonus video!  Feel free to include this in your Flipgrid!

Family Folk Song Project

In music class, we sing folk songs from around the world.  We learn about the culture of our community through folk songs.  While you are home with your family, learn a song your family likes to sing.  Maybe this is a song from your family's culture.

Families: Please teach your child to sing a song from your family that they can share with Mrs. Hiltz and their class.  The song could be a song you learned as a child, including a lullaby, hand clapping game, or finger play.  I would love to hear songs in the variety of languages our students speak at home!  This could also be a good opportunity to call a grandparent or older family member to see if they have a song they could teach you.

Here are some questions you can answer about the song you learn:

Title of the song:
Lyrics:
I learned this song from:
This song is important to our family because:

I would love it if you could sing me the song using the "Music Share" FlipGrid, found in Mrs. Donovan's Google Classroom, or email me a recording of your child or family singing the song at hiltza@lpsma.net.

Though we miss our school family, this could be a good opportunity to learn something new or share a treasured family memory with your children.  I look forward to hearing your family folk songs!

Puff the Magic Dragon - Song Story

Hi Leicester Elementary!  I know we're stuck at home and missing our school and friends.  I wanted to sing you a story.  It's one of my favorites.  Maybe you can sing along!
